Celebrating Wizkid’s 30th Birthday ! Happy birthday To Starboy Wizkid !!!

 

Celebrating Wizkid’s 30th Birthday and the grounds that he keeps breaking for Africa music both locally and internationally, we are celebrating him by updating you with some facts about him.

Ayodeji was born on July 16th 1990 in Surulere, Lagos to a family of 6. He’s the last child and only son of his parents. 

He started singing at the age of eleven under the stage name Lil Prinz. He’s first record was with OJB Jezreel. He was also part of a group at same age called Glorious Five. The group released a 7-track album that was released in the church. The album at the time sold up to 10,000 copies. In interviews, he always talks about how his music career started as a singer in church. In 2006, he changed his name from the moniker Lil Prinz to Wizkid. Naeto C served as a guide on Wizkid’s singing and songwriting career in the early days of his career.

 

In 2011 which was the year of his break out as a major artist, he dropped out of Lead City University in his third year as an “International Relations” students. Same year his solo album was released with E.M.E titled, ‘Superstar’. The album had 17 tracks. The album was the mostly highly anticipated album of the year and also won best album in the Nigeria Entertainment Award in 2012. 

Wizkid has several international collabs over the years but his first International Collaboration was with Akon on Don’t Dull (Remix). 

He is the youngest African artiste to get a Grammy nomination. Wizkid is the first African pop star to perform/sell out Royal Albert Hall in London. He’s also the first African artiste to sell out the o2 arena twice in a roll. Wizkid is the Nigerian artiste with the most award nominations in Nigeria. He is the first African to bag seven Billboard nominations and as well as the first to win three.

 

He’s the first African artiste to win an indigenous award “HER awards” with Brown skin girl at the 2020 BET awards. 

 

He is the first Nigerian artiste to win an award from the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).

 

Wizkid won the Ashford & Simpson Songwriter’s Award at the 2019 edition of the BET Soul Train Awards, alongside Beyonce, for Brown skin girl. Becoming the first Nigerian artiste to do so.

 

Wizkid is the first afro-pop artiste to appear in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Wizkid is the only Nigerian artiste to maintain the number one spot on iTunes World Chart for more than one week on the song “One dance”.
