It took five years for Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ to be overtaken as YouTube’s most-watched video of all time, but only seven months for its successor, Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s ‘See You Again’, to lose the crown.
And who has taken the top spot? Obviously, it’s going to be Justin Bieber, isn’t it?
… oh, it’s not actually the Bieber version, although we’re sure his ‘remix’ helped the original achieve this level of popularity
‘Despacito’ has spent 11 weeks atop the UK Singles Chart, and 12 weeks atop the US Billboard Hot 100. It’s the first Spanish-language number one in the States since the ‘Macarena’ in 1996.
At the time of writing, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s hit has 3,011,987,525 views, while ‘See You Again’ has 2,996,809,134 views, meaning that ‘Despacito’ is the first video to break the 3 billion views barrier.
Meanwhile, Bieber’s version has 470,793,556 views, which is still staggering.
Justin Bieber recently announced the cancellation of his Purpose world tour, later explaining that he let his anxieties and bitterness get the better of him and that he needed to take time out to ensure he was “sustainable”, and that he hopes to one day be a good husband and father.
